Have you ever done something that was scary, but also exhilarating? Forced you to let down your defenses and barriers? Put you at personal risk, tested your courage and ability to truly walk your talk? If you have, then you understand how personally fulfilling and life-changing it can be. And if you have not, I highly recommend that you put yourself out there and give it go. The experience can take many different forms and happen through different kinds of experiences the latest one for me has been to write a book. It is finished and about to be published. I am terrified, excited and thrilled all at the same time. How do you challenge yourself to be and to become your best self and to walk your talk? Its a life long journey and we do not always succeed, but its about the doing of it and the learning from it that matters. Its a sign of authentic leadership and an important quality to develop in life and in business. There is a big difference between personal power and granted authority, however, many people have the tendency to use the words interchangeably. These words refer to two very different aspects of leadership. Power is the capacity or ability to influence the behavior of others. It does not depend upon title, rank, position or authority. It is simply the ability to motivate others to take specific actions because they want to. Authority is the right granted from a person or an organization to another to represent, or to act, in a specified way. Getting people to welcome feedback was the hardest thing I ever had to do as an educator. Professor Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture In its basic form, feedback is simply the exchange of information about how the parts of a system are functioning. And with that feedback comes the understanding that if one or more of the parts veers off course, then a prompt fix is critical to get things back on track. Since people are among these vital parts of the system, then it would make sense that building effective collaboration, cooperation and communication between people is essential to creating successful relationships or relationship systems. But for that to happen on a truly meaningful basis, feedback must be given and received in a way that is heard, received and acted upon in a positive way and that is a learned skill it is the art of giving and receiving feedback. So how are those New Year resolutions working for you? On being human and our immunity to change So how are you doing with those New Years resolutions and other goals you set for yourself last month making progress? Some of you may be doing really well and if you are congratulations! But there may be others of you that no matter how simple or complicated, personal or professional, your resolutions and goals are you just cant seem to stay on track. When thats the case, its easy to blame ourselves for lack of will power, not wanting the change/goal/new thing enough, or any number of reasons for our failure but just for the next few moments, try to stop the blame game with yourself and instead, ask a simple question. Why? Why I am not succeeding with this resolution/goal? Could be a couple of things its not a good goal like maybe its not really YOUR goal maybe its really someone elses that you have taken on as your own? Or maybe its too big too small or not connected to YOUR vision?
